Moritz Haidle continues on his path
regardless: it is admirable how this
young winemaker has consistently
developed his very own style, always aiming
for wines that show character and provenenance
– and which may even polarise.
Haidle, who joined the VDP steering committee
in summer 2019, now concentrates on
Riesling, Spätburgunder and Lemberger. His
“Ritzling” is a solid entry-level wine and with
the Riesling “Schilfsandstein” we already enter
the class of terroir-spiced luxury which
finds its culmination in the compelling, mineral-charged
Lembergers. Breath-taking!
93 2019 Stetten Pulvermächer
Riesling Kabinett
Very restrained on the nose, yeasty, very stone focused, only
hints of (citrus) fruit. On the palate there is mouth-watering
acidity and restrained sweetness, the bold design of a southern
Kabinett with great tension and potential for longevity.
8,5 Vol.-%. cork, €€
96 2018 Stetten Mönchberg Berge
Lemberger GG
Smells like a Hermitage, ethereal top notes, semi-bitter
chocolate, black cherry, leather and peppery hints. On the
palate quite generous and softly-grounded, very fine tannins
in high quantity, accompanied by vivacious, intense tactile
minerality. Lots of juice in the finish. 13,5 Vol.-%. cork, €€€
95 2018 Stetten Mönchberg Gehrnhalde
Lemberger GG
Liquorice, black cherry and some prune scents. On the palate
a lot of texture of very fine means, very fine tannin pixels,
softly grounded, powerfully mineral. The main body is filled
to the brim with substance and yet everything seems so elegant
and fresh. 13 Vol.-%. cork, €€€
92 2018 Stetten Häder Lemberger
Erste Lage trocken
Subtle wood scents, gingerbread, black cherry and violet
pastille notes. Fine-grained tannins, lively acidity, good tactile
mineral presence, medium fruit accompaniment. A very
good length with a preponderance of substance over fruit.
Very long finish. 13 Vol.-%. cork, €€
90 2019 »Pfeffer« Stetten Riesling Kabinett
89 2019 »Ritzling« Riesling trocken
89 2019 »Bunter Mergel« Blaufränkisch tr.
91 2019 »Schilfsandstein« Stetten
Riesling trocken
Extremely complex, defined terroir notes, gypsum, damp
stone, then herbal notes and spices, liquorice and a hint of
cumin. On the palate, unadorned and immediate liveliness,
quite dry, firm acidity, tactile minerality, full-bodied but
also animating. 12,5 Vol.-%, screwcap, €€
