Hats off to Rainer and Daniel Sauer:
Their wines are full of substance and
density without appearing forced or
ungainly in the least. In their in-house competition
between the “official” Silvaner GG and
the “L”- wine, for us it is the GG which takes
this year’s lead. We know, of course, that “L” is
a long-distance runner, hitting its stride later
on in the race. The 2019 Rieslings, likewise,
are total winners: the “Erste Lage” is so animating
that we had to take it quickly off the table
– just in order not to endanger our sober
tasting discipline.

Silvaner GG
Ripe pear on the nose, apple peel, bread crust, nutty aromas
and also a dash of elderflower. Dense and with rich extract on
the palate, properly dry and pervaded by minerality, monumental,
yet power and substance are in good balance. Serene

Erste Lage trocken
Herbal in the defined nose, followed by pear and apple, also
yellow fruit and spice. Lively and mineral on the palate, powerful
and well-structured yet with clear contours; good extract,
fresh and lively acidity. Unembellished and natural.

Riesling GG
A hint of yeast, closed citrus fruit notes and flint. Dense and
compact on the palate, rich in extract and bundled, tight acidity,
more pronounced fruitiness than sugar. Very good length,
excellent ageing potential. 12,5 Vol.-%. screwcap, €€€
93 2019 »Rainer Sauer L« Silvaner trocken
Closed, hindered nose scents of apples and herbs, also a
dash of hot stone. Concentrated and with inner tension on
the palate, good extract and also juiciness, tightly woven, yet
nuanced in its layering with a grippy minerality and a salty
note. Nuances of fine bitter herbs on the finish.

Erste Lage trocken
Mineral-toned, floral Riesling notes and hints of jasmine,
peach and orange blossom. Mineral nuances on the palate,
tense and fresh, juicy with a a dash of carbon dioxide. A racy
Riesling, perfectly proportioned and very animating to
drink. 12,5 Vol.-%, screwcap, €€
