These two brothers are just itching to see
how far they can go. Maximilian and
Philipp Petri, who only took the reins in
cellar and estate in 2018, are courageous.
Their Rieslings are deliberately made in a slender
fashion, avoiding all that is opulent, fleshy
and yellow-fruited. Instead they show the fruit
of green apple and citrus notes, a phenolic tang
and limestone spiciness. It is a style of wine
that may come across as provocative and may
not be for everyone: but we appreciate this
courageous and clear signature. We wonder
what will happen next in Herxheim am Berg.

Riesling trocken
Ripe apple, stone fruit, citrus fruit and orange peel, spices
such as anise on the nose. Strikingly slender on the palate,
not aiming for ripeness or concentration, but taut and with
fine tartness, green apples and lemon juice. Clear signature
with emphasis on slenderness. 11 Vol.-%. cork, €€
earthy notes and wood spice. With a clear sense of purpose
the wine is powerfully built, dynamic across the palate, with
juicy fruit and good sweet extract. Good potential.

Riesling Spätlese trocken
Not a nose that emphasises primary fruit; candied orange
peel, herbs, spice, some apricot, stony notes. In a lean and
taut form, there are citrus notes and tart apple, pronounced
acidity, mineral, stimulating and without an ounce of fat.

Riesling trocken
Tangerine peel on the nose, ripe apple, citrus fruit and herbs.
Lean and with a firm structure on the palate, taut acidity,
lemon juice and green apple. Avoids the lush and emphasises
tension. Phenolic and with a slight astringency - unconventional.

Cabernet Sauvignon trocken
Ripe and full fruit, lots of cassis, blackberry, tobacco smoke,
89 2019 Kallstadt Riesling Kabinett trocken
Finely woven nose with apple and stone fruit, a hint of lemon
zest, verbena and also stony notes. A slenderly built and
juicy Kabinett with notes of citrus fruit, dynamic acidity
that blends in well, apple notes and a fine astringency. No
