We already attested to Carolin Hoffranzen’s<br />

strong performance in<br />

last year’s guide. This year, we can<br />

attest to further improvement. The wines show<br />

both profile and character, like the layered and<br />

stylish “Layterrassen” Riesling or the off-dry,<br />

tightly woven “Contur” Riesling which combines<br />

charm with depth – oh, and we also need<br />

to mention the slate-spice of the “Alte Reben”<br />

Riesling. It was only in 2019 that Carolin Hoffranzen<br />

took over at the »Classisches Weingut<br />

Hoffranzen« in Mehring from her parents Gertrud<br />

and Hans Hoffranzen – evidentally a great<br />

evolution seems underway!<br />

Layet Riesling trocken<br />

Smoky notes on the nose, toasty aromas, charcoal, plus ripe<br />

yellow fruit and hints of thyme. Clear and slender, firm structure,<br />

also due to the wood ageing, fine lemon juice, sweet<br />

apricot and fine phenolics. A multi-layered wine with style<br />

and character. 12 Vol.-%. cork, €€<br />

Riesling Spätlese<br />

Delicate nose of almonds, verbena and white peach. Fresh<br />

and juicy on the palate with crunchy acidity and a fine, balanced<br />

sweetness like that of white crystal sugar, good balance<br />

and mineral undertones. Pleasant aromatic finish. Elegant<br />

and full of finesse. 8 Vol.-%. screwcap, €<br />

Blattenberg Riesling<br />

Stone fruit on the nose, fresh bay leaf, apricot and tangerine,<br />

also notes of ripe grapefruit. On the palate juicy and with<br />

charmingly integrated sweetness, animating, well woven<br />

acidity, fine mineral spiciness; lean and clear. Finely crafted,<br />

elegant, long finish. 12 Vol.-%. cork, €€<br />

90 2018 »Reserve« Mehring Goldkupp<br />

Weisser Burgunder trocken<br />

Lily of the valley on the nose, fresh corn, toasted and smoky<br />

aromas, ripe melon and also hints of quince. Full-bodied and<br />

voluminous on the palate with ripe acidity and sweet extract,<br />

soft base; shows the warmth and generosity of the warm<br />

year. Young, still needs time. 14 Vol.-%. cork, €€<br />

Riesling trocken<br />

Apple and apple peel on the nose, herbs, the summery<br />

scent of a vineyard, warm slate, some rosemary and caraway.<br />

Multi-layered on the palate, fruitiness, spicy-slate nuances,<br />

supported by acidity and citric tartness which combine<br />

to form a coherent ensemble. Multi-faceted.<br />
