Last year, we already noticed the upward
trajectory in this family-run estate in
Oberemmel. This year, the wines seemed
to have gained even more in precision. The
wines are as crunchy as they are tension-laden,
right across the range – and it was thus a pleasure
to award the third star. The fact that the
Niedermenniger Herrenberg Riesling, vibrant
with energy, moved one our tasters to say that
it had “something eternal about it” tells you all
you need to know about the timelessly purist
style of Willems-Willems. And – notwithstanding
this evocation of eternity – we already look
forward to tasting the next vintage!

Riesling trocken
Stony spice with hints of potentilla on a hot stone and iron
oxide; a beguiling scent. On the palate, there is concentrated,
crystalline freshness. Exactly what you want from a Riesling.
Exciting already, but this concentration has an eternal expression.

nice balance between acidity and textural sweetness with
nuances of lime and lemon balm. A little phenolic with a very

Freshness is immediately noticeable followed by scents of
apple and grapefruit which literally jump out of the glass. A
stony, herbaceous note is also evident. On the palate, there is
a bundled, supple freshness, a sinew that runs deliciously

Riesling Spätlese
Berry and floral, almost a defined red berry scent. On the palate
there is crunchy acidity and a comparatively defensive
sweetness. Rich, full-bodied, prepared for bottle ageing in an
almost dry style. Discipline is required not to touch this too

Riesling Auslese
Clear, rich yellow. On the nose ripe citrus fruit, dried lime
peel, herbal spice with a mineral underlay. On the palate a

Riesling Kabinett
Lime and slate, plus a balsamic mineral spiciness at the
very beginning of its development. On the palate, full-bodied,
pithy defensive acidity behind penetrating acidic tension.
Intensely tactile minerality. It has plenty of extract,
but remains typical of a Kabinett. Excellent!
