If any football analogies are to be permitted in
this wine guide, then certainly in connection
with Fritz Keller, owner of this winery. For
years he was the president of football club SC Freiburg,
until he became president of the Deutscher
Fussballbund, Germany’s football association.
Just as the wonderful Spätburgunder Steinriese
from the 2018 vintage started performing in the
glass, we were reminded of the sensational goal
scored by Freiburg’s striker Nils Petersen on 27
January 2018 – spirited from a proud distance of
40 metres in the 68th minute of play against
Borussia Dortmund. That particular stroke of genius
was declared ‘goal of the year’ in 2018.

Smoke and flint on the nose, pear and melon, some pumpkin
chutney. Focused and straightforward on the palate, avoids
opulence, density and also phenolics, vinified for longevity,
but can be enjoyed and appreciated in the short run. Elegant

Wow! A scent you can smell for hours. Rather unusual. Wild
strawberry, nasturtium and a little iron, one could go on and
on. Strong acidity and elegant tannins on the palate, intricately
interwoven, pervaded by minerality. Very individual.

Smoky new wood, redcurrants, piquant fresh fruit. On the
palate, plump, typical for the vineyard, but then slims down,
lots of juiciness, fine acidity, very good tactile minerality. The
finish is medium-weight in fruit. 12,5 Vol.-%. cork, €€€€

Smoky wood, dried tomato, cherry, flinty - mineral spicy
notes. On the palate there is classic proportions: firm tannins
in medium-high quantity, well-integrated acidity, tactile-mineral
interplay, still closed on the nose, concise single-site
