Rudolf May presented a whole phalanx
of unique Silvaners which only cement
his status as one of Franken’s best and
foremost winemakers. What he manages to
pack into his Erste Lage wine from the
Retzstadter Langenberg in terms of density
and mineral verve, others do not even deliver
in their Grosse Gewächse. Both of his
“Schäfer” wines are still characterised by their
maturation in wood, both have model character
in this genre. Both Grosse Gewächse meet
the highest of standards in terms of site expression,
extract and minerality. The top wine in
every respect is “Himmelspfad.” Masterful.

Smoky aromas, pear and quince, toasty notes and herbs on the
nose. Powerful and firmly structured on the palate, good volume
enriched with extract, dense and consistent, phenolic and
with notes of limestone. Showing complexity, a multi-layered,

builds up on the palate, juicy, compact and with tension, traction
and minerality; still seems a bit austere and young. Good
