Julia and Aaron Schwegler have been
most consistent in giving a new direction
to this estate, since having taken over in
2016 from the founder, Aaron’s father. On top
of new packaging, there are now no less than
seven new wines in the portfolio. Their eleven
hectares of vines are farmed organically “because
great wine can only be made in healthy
and vigorous vineyards,” as Aaron Schwegler
reports. He has given even more poise and
grandeur to his wines: the Riesling shows
great individuality, the superb red “Granat”
and “Saphir” are of real stature!

Yellow apple, stone fruit, citrus fruit and also smoky notes on
the nose. On the palate there is a clear, firm outline, straight
and lean with good extract, density and a layer of fine phenolics.
It shows elegance and individuality, good ageing potential.

91 2018 »Reserve« Chardonnay trocken
In the confident nose melon, butternut squash, pear and
toasted aromas. On the palate there is ample volume and
power, medium density although the wood is still somewhat
dominant. There are green walnut notes and well-integrated
fine acidity, with spice on the finish. 13 Vol.-%. cork, €€€
95 2017 »Granat« trocken ZW/CS/ME/CT
Somewhat restrained nose with hints of undergrowth.
Sweet fruit on the tip of the tongue, black mulberry, somewhat
denser matter than the "Saphir", but an even longer
wait for the optimal moment. A German heavyweight without
a shadow of doubt. 14 Vol.-%. cork, €€€€
93 2017 »Saphir« trocken BF/ZW/CS/CF/ME/CT
Scents of black-fruit and blackberries, structured; far from
drinking jam despite 14 % alcohol by volume. The grape varieties
also depict a Burgenland appeal (38% Blaufränkisch,
28% Zweigelt). It has a demanding core with velvety tannins.

92 2017 »Beryll« trocken ZW/CF/BF/CT
Ripe berry fruit on the nose and noticeable alcohol. Then
much fresher on the palate, not at all overripe, but even
with a cool fruit of blueberry, sour cherry and eucalyptus.
Beautiful tension, homely but with a view to the far horizon.
