Max Kilburg, who cultivates the fifteen
hectares of the family-run Weingut
Geierslay in Wintrich, is giving it quite
some bottle. The white wines from the 2019 vintage
and the reds from 2018 together are the best
range of wines this young cellar master has yet
presented. In comparison to previous years, these
wines come across as a tad more grown-up, more
sober, they are altogether more convincing. Max
Kilburg understands the handling of fruit-sweet
and noble sweet wines and has real talent for
Spätburgunder – while his dry Riesling from the
Ohligsberg site is a real statement and a glimpse
of what might yet lie in store.

Cool minerality on the nose, crushed rock and wet stone,
stone fruit, white peach, apple and hints of slate. Taut and
leanly built with good density, has tension and pull, phenolic
layers, dry and with fine tartness. Good balance, young and

Riesling trocken
Scents of stone fruit, vine peach and mirabelle plums, ripe
apples, slate spice nuances and meadow flowers. Lovely
depth in a slender body, wet slate, spicy apple, phenolic layers,
mineral and elegant. A calm wine showing real provenance.

Spätburgunder trocken
Complex Pinot nose with cassis, cherry, fine wood spice,
sage, orange blossom and violets. Dense and tense on the
palate, with good extract and balance of the elements,
compact structure, vivid tannins with the slate forming the
spicy foundation. 12,5 Vol.-%. cork, €€

Riesling Spätlese
Medium, clear yellow. On the nose invigorating citrus fruit,
mineral underlay, tangerine, herbal spice and some blossom
honey notes. Vibrant fruit on the palate, citrus, lively acidity,
good balance, lots of tension, densely integrated. Long and
fresh finish. 7,5 Vol.-%. cork, €€

Yellow-fruity ambience on the nose, vine peach, passion
fruit, tea, clear slate notes. Also clearly marked by origin
on the palate, you think you are standing in a warm slate
vineyard with pronounced minerality, apple notes and phenolic
astringency. A wine with depth and length.
