What an incredible flight of wines are
Carolin and O.H. Spanier’s Grosse
Gewächse from the Roter Hang
(Red Slope): a crystalline Hipping, a full-bodied
Rothenberg, a phenolically-tart Pettenthal and
an Ölberg that is as salty as creamy. The expression
of site character is convincing, the consistency
impressive. One is almost tempted to claim
that “of course,”- even the village wines show the
same sophistication in their class: the Niersteiner
is playful, the Nackenheimer more solemn. But
the very fact that all of this comes with such ease
and as a matter of course proves their hard work.

95 2019 Nierstein Ölberg Riesling GG
Complex aromatics of ripe apricot, mint and myrrh incense
on the nose. Palate opens with a juicy fruit and creamy undertones.
A classic style but with innovation and integrity,
densely-woven, taut acidity and saltiness; the generosity of
the site is energised in this wine with its long finish. Great potential.

Ripe yellow fruit on the nose with earthy notes and herbal
undertones reflecting true Roter Hang in the summer heat.
Opens with juicy dense yellow fruit, counters with phenolic
astringency; high intensity, dense, yet lean and with drive.

Rothenberg Riesling GG 2019
Rich yellow colour with greenish nuances. On the nose blood
orange and light wood spice. On the palate there are fine phenolics,
integral acidity, discreet minerality, concentrated
fruit and lots of texture. A round, harmonious and homogeneous
Burgundian-style wine with discreet minerality.

Stone fruit is accompanied by herbs, apricot, mango on the
nose, alongside red apple and some liquorice. The palate

Sweet Reine Claude Doree plum on the nose with apple,
balsamic spice and slightly smoky undertones. The palate
is well-balanced between the crunchy acidity and textural
fully ripe fruit. Good density, rich in substance, has potential.
