It is really hard to explain why this estate
still flies below the radar – since what they
deliver is truly extraordinary. They hold
parcels in the best sites and in the very best
Rheingau tradition, as much devotion is lavished
on Riesling as on Spätburgunder.
Both of these flagship varieties come with a
real signature style and are characterised by
clarity and freshness. That this is down to the
meticulousness of cellar master Peter Perabo
and his team is evident. Perhaps they work according
to the words of Saint Hildegard of
Bingen: “Wine heals and pleases man.”

Katerloch Riesling trocken
Shattered rock on the nose, plus complex fruit, blood orange,
peppery notes, and balsamic tones. The palate has vibrant
energy, is dense, substantial, supple, intensely mineral in its
texture and has very concise acidity. Pithy, still very young.

94 2017 »S« Rüdesheim Pinot Noir trocken
Toasty oak, smoke and also some elderberry rise, almost
ethereally, from the glasss. On the palate, there is some
creamy vanilla, which complements the firm, finest tannins
well. Excellent acidity offers proper backbone. Real class.

92 2017 Assmannshausen Pinot Noir trocken
A hint of black elderberry resonates fragrantly on the cherry
nose together with smoke. On the palate, the fruit is fine,
ripe, supple and pure. The finest tannins are taut and wonderfully
firm, giving the wine its graceful structure. Very
good. 13 Vol.-%, cork, €€€
93 2017 Rüdesheim Riesling Auslese
An extremely delicious wine, with genuinely noble botrytis
spice plus candied fruit in the background. On the palate
there is tangy, dense acidity and some texture with medium
viscosity. Restrained sweetness here, rather than an
over-concentrated and extremely sweet Auslese.

Clear, fresh and complex on the nose: fresh citrus zest,
blood orange and hints of spice. On the palate, full-bodied,
powerful, fine phenolics, firm but ripe acidity. This is a distinctive
'terroir' wine with depth, and made for long ageing
