Oliver Gabel confidently materializes the<br />

potential of his local terroirs: the soils<br />

in and around Herxheim are characterised<br />

by limestone. Thus, the young winemaker<br />

has put his focus on Pinot-varieties, especially<br />

Weiss- and Spätburgunder. As of 2019, Gabel<br />

has farmed his vineyards organically. He puts<br />

particular importance on the ageing of his<br />

wines in wood, the oldest barrels in his cellar<br />

are 130 years old – and are still used for fermentation<br />

and maturation in his 19th-century cellar.<br />

All the Pinots show tension, spice and nuances<br />

of limestone minerality – as well as Gabel’s<br />

clear hallmark. A strong performance!<br />

Weissburgunder trocken<br />

Yellow blossom on the nose, apple, cider, yellow-fruited hints<br />

and fine wood spice a hint of yeast. Dry on the palate, without<br />

kitsch or cliché Burgundian in impression with Pfalz character.<br />

Powerful, clearly defined outline, shows spice, substance<br />

and depth. Youthful. 13 Vol.-%. cork, €€<br />

relatively lean and tight structure, vivid acidity, prominent<br />

and ripe tannins, spicy fruit on the finish.<br />

91 NV »Blanc de Blancs« brut nature<br />

Nuanced complex nose with fine spiciness, discreet fruit,<br />

yeast notes and a hint of iodine. Lively acid structure, apple<br />

tart hints, juicy citrus fruit. A balanced sparkling wine, fresh,<br />

multi-layered and complemented by a delicate saltiness.<br />

Spätburgunder trocken<br />

Finely woven nose with a hint of wood spice, red cherry, clove<br />

and also anise. Not a bold Pinot. Finely balanced on the palate<br />

with exquisitely chiselled acidity and ripe, textured tannins.<br />

Sour cherry, bay leaf and almond core - elaborate.<br />

Lots of cassis on the nose against a spicy wood background,<br />

also beetroot, juniper berry and dark aromas. Complexity in a<br />

Apple and raisins, flowers and floral notes, some wood<br />

spice and yeast. Lean construction, juicy and creamy on<br />

the palate, emphatically dry, ripe and balanced acidity,<br />

chalky mineral spiciness, again apple and white pepper. A<br />
