Few German winemakers can claim to
have returned a historic site to its rightful
place – and few names are as associated
with a specific site as that of August Kesseler
and the Assmannshäuser Höllenberg.
Kesseler’s pioneering path was stony and characterised
by hard work. Today he is amongst
the icons of German viticulture. Spätburgunder
is no longer the sole focus of the estate, his
Rieslings are just as amazing. The two vintages
of Berg Schlossberg which we present now
are cultural monuments made with ageing potential.

Dewy, still very youthful fruit on the nose: tangerine. The intensity
of the citrus aromas is also beguiling on the palate.
The concentrated palate vibrates with mineral freshness,
one is aware of salty stone notes. Everything is taut, bright,

The penetrating, smoky nose is almost reminiscent of incense.
On the palate, fine cherry fruit is linked with elderberry;
both overlaid on stoniness, giving the stone notes charm
and the fruit depth. Fine acidity brightens everything. The

The heightened fruitiness of juicy mandarins and oranges
bursts from the glasss, then dried hay flowers gently steer
the aromatics into the ethereal. On the concentrated palate
zest and fine, ripe freshness can be made out alongside wonderful,

Ethereal scent reminiscent of smoked meat and salty, dried
herbs. On the palate, both incredible transparency and concentration
prevail. Finesse and power are paired. Finest fruit
shines bright over the stoniness and only makes it more intense.

Ripe tangerine peel is highly aromatic on the precise nose.
On the palate, ripe orange note are present too, bright and
clear and with pronounced juiciness. A ripe acidity holds
back at first, but comes into its own on the finish.
