Kay Thiel reports that his winery “grew
from tiny to small”: Indeed, this winemaker
in Königswinter doubled his, by
now, organically-certified vineyards to almost
two hectares. His steep sites of various soil
types like clay, greywacke and slate are dispersed
across 35km along the river Rhine in
the villages of Niederdollendorf, Dattenberg
and Leutesdorf. After his successful debut in
the guide last year, his wines have gained even
more in stylistic confidence and individual expression.
What Thiel delivers really is an asset
to the Mittelrhein wine scene!
91 2019 Riesling trocken
Notes of spontaneous fermentation in the multi-layered
nose, herbs, yellow fruit, apricot and apple followed by some
malt and yellow floral hints. On the palate there is an energetic
acidity flanked by salty notes in a slender structure.
Lots of content, taut and young. 12 Vol.-%. screwcap, €€
90 2019 Frühburgunder trocken
Sweet cherry and raspberry on the nose, floral notes of violet
followed by wet leather and also a dash of rosehip. On the
palate there is a supple onset and a soft foundation, finelychiselled
ripe acidity, clear and undisguised with finely-extracted

89 2019 Elbling Landwein feinherb
89 2018 »Cuvee Henry« brut
Sparkling wine with the curious partners of Elbling, Riesling
and Gelber Malinger. Ripe yellow fruit is accompanied by apple
notes and fine yeasty nuances. Juicy on the palate with
fresh acidity and good spice. Texture and sweet fruit nuances
blend into a generously good balance.

91 2018 Spätburgunder trocken
Cherry and wild strawberry on the nose, herbs, floral hints of
violets and lavender with nuances of toasty aromas. Powerful
and emphatically dry on the palate, almost demanding in
expression, the ripe acidity provides balance, spiciness and
also fine savouriness. Precise tannins, elegant and long.

89 2019 Gelber Malinger trocken
Apricot, apple, yeast-based pastry and some vanilla aromas
on the nose. On the palate juicy and poised by fine
spice with apple notes reappearing. Clear, almost crystalline
with a well-integrated vein of acidity in a slender body.
Fine phenolics. Natural character.
