You could easily say that the rediscovery
of the Binger Scharlachberg is down to
Carolin and Erik Riffel. Their wines
have as little to do with “Scharlachberg Meisterbrand”
(a mass-market brandy) as a wine
from the Wormser Liebfrauenstift with a cheap
Liebfraumilch. It’s quite spectacular what
grandiose wines this organically-certified estate
delivers – from their elegant Riesling Brut
Nature via their sophisticated single-site-Rieslings
all the way to their finely-phenolic “Orange-Naked”
Landwein and their nobly sweet
delicacies: a meltingly good Auslese from the
Scharlachberg and a dense Beerenauslese.

Clear, medium yellow. On the nose matchstick, smoke, mineral
spice, ripe grapefruit, mint. On the palate bright acidity,
layers of ripe citrus fruit, some pineapple and light peach. Impressive
structure, lightly phenolic, understated power and
impressive length, potential. 13 Vol.-%. cork, €€€

Clear, medium yellow. On the nose a lot of smoke, matchstick
then layers of citrus fruit, and mint. On the palate firm, ripe
acidity, citrus fruit, spice, some green apple, interwoven with
minerality. Excellent structure, elegant and powerful, long.

Intense aroma of ripe peach, yeast spice and shattered rock
and floral notes. On the palate lean, taut and dense. Bright
acidity, intense, juicy and elegant. Clearly conveys terroir. Sophisticated

Deep, clear yellow. On the nose ripe, exotic fruits with layers
of dried apricot and spice, elderflower honey. Rich on the palate,
grippy acidity, honey spice, peach and mango. Great
structure, layers of phenolics and texture, good potential.

On the nose grated apple, pear, some rose, quince and
some light almond. On the palate supple acidity, fine phenolics,
rose water, apple, quince. A balanced wine with medium
structure and good length, very appealing.
