Farming: in transition to organic
Maximilian Greiner worked both at
home and abroad after graduating
from Geisenheim. In 2017 he moved
back to the subregion of the Markgräflerland,
“out of conviction”, and founded his own
winery. He farms his one hectare biodynamically,
because to him this is “the origin of great
wines.” Greiner says that “wine is not just a result
of nature but an expression of our mental
attitude and of terroir.” He affords his wines
sufficient time and rest in wooden barrels so
they “develop of their own accord.” Exciting
wines, a real discovery!

Berry, herbaceous, buttery, spring meadows, typical scents
for the variety, with some wood influence. On the palate a
great combination of substance and elegance, with juiciness
and a very fine acidity. Very Burgundian with minerality. Gastronomic
wine. 13 Vol.-%. cork, €€€
way, artisanal tannins in medium-high quantity, slightly astringent,
comparatively well-accompanied by fruit, a substantial

On the nose there are notes of apple, apple peel, nuts, sesame
seeds, herbal accents from the spontaneous fermentation.
On the palate there is some texture, silky phenolics, lots
of juiciness and a hint of sweetness with medium substance
and length. Balanced Chardonnay. 13 Vol.-%. cork, €€€
92 2017 »Vulkan« Feuerbach Steingässle
Spätburgunder Badischer Landwein tr.
Smells unsulphured, some dried fig, plum and cassis. On the
palate there is very fine, yet grippy, grainy tannin, good density
and also texture, creamy background and a mineral tinge,
ripe spice in the finish. An exciting design with potential.

A very traditional Spätburgunder scent, almonds, sweet
cherries and some milk chocolate. On the palate hearty in its

Spontaneous fermentation, herbs, apple peel and bread
crust, grapey and mineral spiciness, some yeast. On the
palate there is good tension, loosely-knit phenolics, dry but
not harsh, quite linear in construction, but has texture and
volume. Individual wine, also pairs well with food.
