From his nine hectares of vineyards in the
subregion of Markgräflerland, Ulrich
Bernhart crafts profound and elegantly-balanced
wines that really score with their
subtle complexity. That is as true for the
full-bodied white wines as it is for the well-structured
red wines – all of which come across as
eminently gastronomic. The Spätburgunder
from the Laufener Wingerte is downright exemplary
with its inherent coolness. But we also
have to mention something quite outside viticulture:
the family also runs the “Dormitorium”
in Sulzburg, a small but utterly charming
hotel which is absolutely worth staying in.

Spicy, mineral notes rise from the glass. The smell is complemented
by a light apple aroma. On the palate, an invigorating
acidity, lots of power and body. Wine with good potential, but
already a perfect accompaniment to food.

On the nose discreet vanilla and some pear scents. On the
palate, fine acidity, an almost crunchy impression, straightforward
with fine phenolics and nice minerality, pear notes
again, plus some apple. A slender, sophisticated Pinot Gris.

Erste Lage trocken
On the nose fragrance of dried mango, plus some honeydew
melon, ripe and rich. On the palate, well-integrated acidity,
grippy, hints of exotic fruit. Harmoniously shaped throughout,
finishes fresh and concentrated. 13 Vol.-%. cork, €€
92 2017 Laufen Wingerte Spätburgunder GG
Concise cherry fruit and black pepper on the nose, animating
throughout. Fine tannins on the palate, elegant and precise
with well-integrated acidity, cherry notes again, delicate
minerality. With a rather cool style, this Pinot Noir is fun to
drink. 13 Vol.-%. cork, €€€
92 2019 »fumé« Sauvignon Blanc trocken
A bouquet that finely balances ripe fruit (nectarine, gooseberry)
and piquant spice (elderflower). On the palate, too,
the scales are in balance: texture and volume meet fine
