Our motto,” the estate reports, “is the
gentle and meticulous care of grapes
in vineyard and cellar. This means
tending our vineyards in tune with nature,
with ground cover in the vine rows and eschewing
herbicides.” Gunter Künstler and his
wines need no introduction, of course. He
stands for an utterly classic style. The wines we
tasted in 2019 convinced us with pronounced
fruit and clear site expression – and the wines
from the river Main side of the Rheingau tend
generally to be a little rounder and sweeter
than their counterparts from the opposite end
in Rüdesheim.
93 2019 Hochheim Kirchenstück Riesling GG
Fragrant on the nose with yellow fruitiness and spice. White
pepper. On the palate flavours of caramelised apricot and hibiscus.
Rich in extract yet harmonious, fine-boned with a vivid,
sweet counterbalance. Balanced and supple. Extremely
fine. 12,5 Vol.-%, screwcap, €€€
93 2019 Rüdesheim Berg Schlossberg
Riesling GG
Fruit, spice and minerality on the nose: parsley root, lovage
with tropical hints of papaya and young pineapple. Sandstone.
On the palate powerful phenolics with pronounced
acidity, medium body and good ageing potential.
12,5 Vol.-%, screwcap, €€€
93 2019 Rüdesheim Berg Rottland Riesling GG
Lemon and lemon balm, flint on the nose; firm grip on the
palate with texture as well as fine, yet determining, spiciness.
Stone fruit. Tightly woven and harmonious. Juicy acidity
dominates into the finish. 12,5 Vol.-%, screwcap, €€€
93 2019 Hochheim Hölle Riesling GG
Tangerine and vine peach on the nose, also herbaceous
notes. On the palate animating minerality with firm acidity
and vivid sweetness. Rich in extract. Everything has smooth
foundations. Lemon zest and discreet phenolics on the finish.
Needs time. 13 Vol.-%, screwcap, €€€
