A
new stylistic direction is clearly evident
at Weingut Erwin Riske. The
wines offer an obvious freshness and
density, while the purity of the fruit is a real
achievement. The young wines still rely on oak
– even if the fruit underneath does not necessarily
require such support. Nonetheless, Jan
Riske and his father are fine-tuning their quality
and the wines themselves have sufficient
substance to deal with the oak. The freshness
evident in the hot vintage of 2018 also points
to a promising future for this long-established
Dernau estate.

Frühburgunder trocken
Smoke and elderberry on the nose lead into something almost
ethereal. On the palate, freshness, concentration; the
aromas prevail. Delicate and gentle, ripe, fine tannins nestle
against the cherry-like fruit. Something pleasantly bitter
emerges discreetly. 13 Vol.-%. cork, €€

Some dark, heavy oak overlays the cherry fruit on the nose.
With a little air contact more freshness is revealed. On the
palate, creamy, ripe but really aromatically expressive; cherry
notes combine with velvety tannins. Round and smooth.

Oak, toast, smoke and ripe cherry set a rich tone. Fine, ripe
fruit purity shines through on the palate, which also holds a
lot of freshness. It needs bottle age to bring out the inherent
elegance. 13 Vol.-%. cork, €€€

Deep, resonant oak tones reveal something autumnal - heralding
a winter wine. The palate is fresher, but has a nice density
of ripe, fine cherry fruit and equally ripe tannins. The finish
is fresh and animating. 13 Vol.-%. cork, €€€

Cassis and elderberry are fragrant and aromatic on the
nose. On the palate, even more fullness of fruit gathers:
everything is round, almost broad, so much ripeness and the
warmth of the vintage is captured. But freshness and aromatics
