Karl Josef and Christopher Loewen just
manage to deliver once again with their
2019 vintage – as is their wont: Mosel
Rieslings that actually can encompass both finesse
and expressiveness. The dry “1896”
Riesling with the white label accomplishes this
feat effortlessly: this subtle Riesling is our Falstaff-Tip
this year. Its off-dry version from this
vineyard planted in 1896 (red label) has more
body and density and yet is a far cry from anything
heavy. Such displays are anathema to the
Loewens – where the focus is on solid craft and
authenticity.

Intensely spicy on the nose, herbs, citrus notes, balsamic
spicy slate nuances. Creamy on the palate, then taut in acidity
and phenolic content, powerful and very long lasting tactile
minerality. Spectacularly extract-rich, and this is realised
in a very fine way. 12,5 Vol.-%. cork, €€€

Riesling Beerenauslese
Mineral notes on the nose, peach and incense. On the palate
saffron followed by yellow fruit, very concentrated, much extract,
restrained acidity, smoky minerality, a hint of stone
dust and a fine grip. Creamy, caramel, mineral finish, remains
long on the palate. 7 Vol.-%. cork, €€€€

Riesling GG
Blossom honey and crushed rock, mirabelle plums, herbal
notes and spicy slate nuances. On the palate this is dense
with very fine phenolics, intensely mineral on the palate,
both chiselled and powerful. Great length, elegant acidity.

93 2019 Thörnich Ritsch Riesling GG
Initially there are just aromas of spontaneous fermentation,
but they dissipate quickly with candied lemon peel, smoke
and tangerine notes emerging. On the palate silky and
poised, quite calm and balanced, almost distinguished in its
fine but rich texture. Fine acidity, terpenic finish.

Herrenberg Riesling trocken
A spiciness of great complexity on the nose, followed by
ripe citrus notes, dried orange peel, spice box scents and a
hint of over-ripeness. On the palate juicy, delicate but with
great inner firmness and delicate acidity. A wonderfully
playful, mineral palate. 12,5 Vol.-%, cork, €€€
