The reconstruction of this well-known
and family-run estate in Wehlen continues
apace and shows gratifying results.
The trio of Grosse Gewächse from the
Wehlener Sonnenuhr, Graacher Domprobst
and Bernkasteler Lay not only depicts a contiguous
band of steep slate sites, but delivers a
faithful picture of what they have in common
and what differentiates them. That there is
something poetically inherent in these wines,
comes across in the attributes our tasters used:
“warm-hearted and joyful”, “charming and
experienced”, “mysterious sweetness”. Please,
do pour another glass!
93 2019 Wehlen Sonnenuhr Riesling GG
White gold in appearance with herbal-spicy scents and ethereal,
fir tree honey nuances. On the palate there is penetrating
acidity, but also viscous fullness followed by expressive
tones of grapefruit jam, wheat fields and hay. This wine is
charming and experienced at the same time. A wine with dimension

Spring green reflections. On the nose white peach, cardamom,
citrus peel and Calvados. A mouthfeel like heavy silk
with dense sweetness, creamy underlying acidity and a very
animating and dynamic finish. A warm-hearted and cheerful
wine. 12 Vol.-%. cork, €€€

Greenish hues. On the nose meadow herbs with subtle floral
notes, rose. On the palate, a composition of delicate silkiness
and mysterious sweetness. Very ripe apples on the finish. The
wine needs a few more years to develop fully.

Soft yellow. On the nose “dark” spicy nuances followed by
mint, verbena, acacia honey, ripe boskoop apples, rhubarb
and medlar fruits. On the palate a very classic Auslese with
clear and expressive character. A multifaceted, precise and
ageable wine. 7,5 Vol.-%. cork, €€
89 2019 Erden Riesling Kabinett feinherb
Green reflections in appearance. Subtle herbal spiciness
on the nose with slight hints of stone fruit and a citrusy
note. Playfully balanced on the palate, the fine acidity carries
the sweetness but remains so understated and not isolated
thus gently giving resonance to the fruit.
