nice trip down memory lane,” noted
one of our tasters about the rather classical
Grauburgunder Spätlese from the
Birkweiler Rosenberg site, which also happens
to bear a historic label: after all, Weingut Grassmück
in Birkweiler was founded as early as
1667. What a pairing this wine would be with
roast haunch of venison with cranberry sauce
and Spätzle! Yet, Simon Grassmück also likes to
experiment and show courage. He does so with
“Quantum S”, an unusual barrique-aged blend
of Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and
Scheurebe, showing both density and fruity
charm. Grassmück clearly has courage!

Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Scheurebe, matured in
barrique. Spice on the nose, smoke, pear, cassis and mango.
Juicy and spicy. On the palate there’s balanced acidity, well
judged power, density and fruity charm. An unusual combination
that has been done well. 13,5 Vol.-%. cork, €€

Pinot Noir trocken
Dark cherry fruit on the concentrated nose; a little soy sauce,
cranberry jam and wood perfume. Powerful and bold on the
palate with prominent tannins and lots of substance, the alcohol
is well integrated, the acidity vivid. Spicy and consistent
- ideal. 14 Vol.-%. cork, €€

Grauburgunder Spätlese trocken
Roasted walnuts, chestnut puree and ripe pear show on the
nose, also some rose. A classic dry Spätlese with power, fruit,
juice, spice and a dash of sweetness. This could have come
from Baden and be called Ruländer - a nice excursion into the

88 2019 Sauvignon Blanc Kabinett trocken
Powerful and ripe fruit notes of mango and blackcurrant on
the nose, lush and spicy bouquet, some lemongrass. On the
palate there is luscious fruit, lively acidity provides momentum,
hints of sweetness. Quite full-bodied for a Kabinett.

Pinot Blanc trocken
Savoury aroma with wood spice from barrique ageing, ripe
yellow fruit, pineapple. Shows volume on the palate, well
built with extract and muscle. Again a lot of spice and also
texture, juice and minerality, ripe citrus fruit. Good length.
Will evolve. 13 Vol.-%, screwcap, €€
