After graduating from Geisenheim and
completing stints in New Zealand and
Africa, Daniel Schmitt took over his parental
estate in Mettenheim in 2009 and has
since increased his vineyards from eight to seventeen
hectares. His entry level wines already
show certain standards – like the animating Riesling
and the Silvaner which is both juicy and
spicy. The single-site wines then add personality.
The Spätburgunder from the Bechtheimer Stein
connects power and feeling, the Riesling from
the Bechtheimer Geyersberg is well-proportioned,
full of tension and density. Altogether a very successful
performance – more of that please!

Powerful nose of peach and apricot and a fine petrol note.
Taut on the palate with tension, extract and density, ripe
acidity and salty underlay. Dry, eschews sweetness and
harmony, well-balanced, shows personality.

Pear on the nose, yellow blossom, apple and some apricot.
Juicy and with well-judged substance on the palate, texture
and spice are in harmony, the acidity is ripe and juicy.
Well-balanced, shows earthy and elegant notes, good substance.

90 2017 Bechtheim Stein Spätburgunder tr.
Ripe Amarena cherry on the nose, wood spice and violets
with blood orange. Compact and complex on the palate with
lots of spice and a delicious, ripe acidity and tannin. Has substance
and power, but also a Pinot feeling. Vivid and with further
potential. 13,5 Vol.-%. cork, €€
91 2019 Huxelrebe Beerenauslese
Rich, clear yellow. Initially rather restrained nose, cooked
quince, dried pear, apricot and some smoke. On the palate
lots of spice, nutmeg, lime zest and grapefruit. Powerful
sweetness, restrained acidity, lots of power and length, finishes
with spice. 11,5 Vol.-%. cork, €€
89 2019 Riesling trocken
A subtle yellow in the glass, ripe apricot, mango and vine
peach on the nose. Finely-balanced Riesling with vivid acidity,
beautiful fruit and the right amount of sweetness. Slender
and straightforward structure, pleasant flow, fine spiciness.
