The new team at Karthäuserhof:
Richard Grosche (li.) and Mathieu Kauffmann
i ndividualists who forge their path with passion
and idiosyncratic wines: Thorsten
Melsheimer from Reil, farming his steep
slopes biodynamically and Florian Lauer
from Ayl – he farms his vineyards entirely
without copper. There also is much organic
farming promise in Mosel-newcomer
Richard Grosche who just took over the
running of Weingut Karthäuserhof in the
Ruwer alongside Mathieu Kauffmann. They
plan to start conversion next year. However,
it is not just with Riesling that the Mosel
scores highly. Spätburgunder also offers
i nteresting possibilities, spurred on by
climate change. “Elegant Mosel Pinots from
the warmer sites are an exciting addition to
wine menus,” says Zigmars Grinbergs.
Nobody can tell what the future holds.
Especially not in these turbulent, pandemic
times. One thing, however, is clear: there is
so much more potential in Mosel, Saar and
Ruwer, even if the wines will not fetch the
prices they did 120 years ago. The wine
scene here is more diverse than ever before
and the 2019 vintage – from the top
producers – is incredibly exciting.
Internationals markets have only just begun
to (re-) discover the region. These
opportunities need to be seized. I cannot wait.
