Volker Hauer runs Weingut Hauer together
with his son André. They have almost
12 hectares of vines spread around
Bad Dürkheim, Leistadt and Kallstadt. Some of
their wines have rather demonstrative names,
like “Glücksau’’ (=lucky swine) or “Saustark’’
(=piggishly powerful), but it is the content rather
than the label that deserves attention. This father-son
team produce a number of specialities,
like the aromatic Cabernet Blanc which illustrates
that real wines with profile can be made
from this undervalued variety. Likewise, their
Cabernet Mitos “Saustark” pleases with its fruity
tartness and masculine character. Well done!

Fragrant bouquet with a blade of mace and freshly grated
nutmeg, rose and lavender, also citrus fruit. On the palate
there’s power and substance, mild acidity, phenolic and tidy
spiciness, also some pink pepper. This would pair well with
spicy dishes. 13,5 Vol.-%. screwcap, €
and also muscle. For drinking by the fire or with hearty food.

89 2019 »Glücksau« feinherb TR/RL
Gewürztraminer and Rieslaner make up the “Glücksau”. Rose
petals on the nose, lychee and ripe mango. On the palate
there is soft acidity and juice, a well-woven sweetness provides
harmony and charm, plenty of fragrance. A blend for
sommeliers and rainy Sunday afternoons.

90 2018 »Saustark« Cabernet Mitos trocken
Fruity, spicy nose of elderberries, elderberry jam and blackcurrants
along with ink and soy sauce. Elderberry on the palate
with a good freshness, a fine astringency, grippy tannins.
Masculine in character, will show its potential when paired
with meat. 13,5 Vol.-%. cork, €

Auslese trocken
Strong fragrance of cherry, chocolate-coated cherry in
Kirsch, wood savouriness, allspice and ground ginger. Sweet
fruit dominates the front palate, there’s a lot of substance
90 2019 Bad Dürkheim Cabernet Blanc tr.
Powerful and substantial Cabernet Blanc with aromas of
grapefruit and lime zest, gooseberry and lychee. Juicy,
powerful and with a dash of sweetness on the palate, spice
comes through later along with ripe fruit. Good extract, a
grown-up wine with character. 13,5 Vol.-%, screwcap, €
