Even if the Grosse Gewächse were not
submitted for tasting, the current releases
of this princely estate leave a very
good impression. The majestic vineyard site of
the Homburger Kallmuth with its steep terraces,
dropping sharply to the bank of the river
Main, are diverse enough to allow for at least
two stylistic directions: one taut, focussed on
minerality as expressed in the “Erste Lagen”
wines, the other opulent, full-fruited in the
late-harvest-like “S”-series. These wines are
object lessons in natural history and not at all
boring.

Erste Lage trocken
Finely spicy, clearly terroir-influenced on the nose with balsamic
undertones and notes of crushed rock. Straightforward
on the palate, good extract, a delicate layer of phenolics,
a hint of pronounced fruitiness, overall rather reductive.
Ideal for a medium ageing period. 13 Vol.-%. screwcap, €€

Rich yellow colour. Candied peach, ginger and valerian on the
nose, some evolution. On the palate luscious texture and
suppleness, quite seamlessly round, ripe acidity, concentrated
palate flavours. A full-throttle Silvaner that can take on
spicy sauces. 14 Vol.-%. screwcap, €€

Candied pineapple, highly ripe yellow fruit, also still somewhat
primary. Plump and full on the palate, almost a little viscous,
strong alcohol, ripe acidity, almost an Auslese style. Powerful
and fruity, will need some time. 13,5 Vol.-%. screwcap, €€

Closed on the nose with some yellow fruit and smoky-chalky
undertones. On the palate silky and poised, a dry Spätlese
style with emphasis on the fruit, lively acidity and a hint of
sweetness interplay around each other. Will be very accessible
with bottle age. 13,5 Vol.-%. screwcap, €€

Erste Lage trocken
Closed in the fragrance, a little grapey and bergamot
notes. On the palate, a smooth start, then becomes densely
rich, still very compact and completely introverted, harbours
loads of extract under its seemingly unapproachable
shell - but the depth is recognisable!
