A
mention of the Krone in Assmannshausen
may well conjure up thoughts
of a traditional country inn rather than
a well-placed Rheingau wine estate. Peter Perabo
who works here, not only knows how to
handle heavy motorbikes, but is a profound
talent when it comes to Pinot Noir. The cellar
master and his team really manage to masterfully
express the mineral tension and depth of
these Assmannshausen sites in their Spätburgunders.
Their Spätburgunder “Juwel” is a
symbol of their style. However, Krone also
knows how to make Weissburgunder and Riesling.
These are wines that deliver real pleasure.
92 2019 Hallgarten Weissburgunder trocken
Apple and pear on the fine nose, with a portion of citrus fruit,
hay and some thyme. On the palate juicy and spicy with good
density and tension, firm in structure due to wood ageing,
good freshness, mineral spiciness. Focused wine with potential.
13 Vol.-%, cork, €€€
94 2014 »Juwel« Assmannshausen
Spätburgunder trocken
The fact that a Pinot from 2014 presents itself in such lively
fashion is thrilling. Aromatic intensity on the nose with tones
of sandalwood, bottled strawberries and cherry. On the palate,
the fruit is somewhat juicier and cooler. Poised with fine
minerality. Round, harmonious, accessible and profound.
13 Vol.-%, cork, €€€€
93 2015 Assmannshausen Höllenberg
Spätburgunder GG
Already spicy, dense, warm fruit on the nose. The same on
the palate: sweet black cherry, juicy plum, some almond,
spicy finish. Acidity and noticeable minerality carry this supple,
very fine wine with tension. 13 Vol.-%, cork, €€€
92 2016 Assmannshausen Frankenthal
Spätburgunder Erste Lage trocken
Still somewhat youthful on the nose with cherry stone, red
cherries, spicy and green tones. The acidity is still distinct,
but underpinned with pleasant sour cherry. The wood is very
nicely and gently integrated, contributing to the finely-balanced
overall package. 13 Vol.-%, cork, €€€
89 2019 »Pinot« Rosé trocken
90 2016 Assmannshausen
Spätburgunder trocken
89 2017 Spätburgunder trocken
90 2019 »Alte Reben« Riesling
Clear, pale yellow. On the nose fine citrus fruit, lemon
balm, mint, honeydew melon. Lively acidity on the palate,
tangerine, lime, lemon balm, stone fruit; lively. Medium
structure, pleasantly rounded. Ideal picnic wine.
12,5 Vol.-%, screwcap, €€
