Since we always encourage our wine estates
to also submit more mature wines,
Herbert Weis sent us an Auslese from the
Kaseler Nies’chen site to taste this year: a wine
that delivers the true and beautiful glory of
mature Ruwer in the glass and exhorts us not
to open the bottles in our cellars too early.
However, his younger wines were just as convincing,
with his Nies’chen Im Taubenberg
from the 2019 vintage taking the top spot: a
dry “Grosses Gewächs” entirely focused on
slate. Also noteworthy is that Hotel Weis and
Restaurant “Vinum” belong to this estate.

Im Taubenberg Riesling trocken
On the nose strongly focused on minerality, lots of slate, only a
little (but still some) yellow fruit. Poised and full on the palate,
fine substance. The acidity is seamlessly connected to the body,
even the sweetness is completely merged with the silky extract.

Auf den Mauern Riesling trocken
A little overripe on the nose, apricot, sultana and hints of panettone.
Very animating on the palate, delicate phenolics, smooth
base, salty notes, round with depth, sweetness and acidity harmonise
with each other. Good body, but also concentration.

Riesling Auslese
Buttercup-yellow colour, deliciously evolved nose of white berries
and also burnt sugar. On the palate almost like smoked tea
with fresh acidity and elegant sweetness, like that of pickled
pumpkin. Immensely complex, exciting, mature but not old.

Nies'chen Riesling Auslese ***
Beautiful light golden yellow reflections in the glass, delicate
nose like that of a cool morning breeze with hints of delicate
herbs. On the palate an elegant sweetness with fine crème
brûlée notes and a juicy, long-lasting, fresh acidity on the finish.
Very animating! 8,5 Vol.-%. cork, €€€

Fruity and fragrant, peach and apricot scents, followed by
mineral-spicy notes with iodine undertones. Silky and finely
chiselled on the palate, the sweetness is wonderfully integrated
into the structure, the ripe acidity carries the fruit. A harmonious
