The site name could refer to the spiciness
of the Rieslings grown here, to the ancient
practice of seasoning wine with herbs or to
a former herb garden on this spot. The site
itself has 53ha/131 acres and an incline of
up to 65%, ascending 180m/590ft from
the riverbank. The slope is characterised by
its many cliffs and ledges and its great
number of old vines, still trained on single
stakes. The red volcanic rhyolite soils
(often called Rotliegendes) make this site
unique in the Mosel.

Weathered red shale characterises this steep
site with up to 65% incline and full southern
aspect. The warm meso climate of this
particularly warm stretch of river brings
forth some of the Mosel’s most opulent
wines. The 1.5ha/3.7 acre Prälat parcel is, in
a sense, the core of this larger site in Erden.
