The fact that Shelter Winery, run by Silke
Wolf and Hans-Bert Espe, produces exquisite
Pinot Noirs is by now known
well beyond Baden’s confines. With their Pinots
from the 2018 vintage, however, they
have accomplished a real feat. The fabulous
Pinot Noir “N114” demonstrates tension and
finest tannins of great quality. It counts
amongst the best Spätburgunders in Baden!
And there is absolutely nothing to find fault
with, in the rest of their range, even their entry-level
Spätburgunder shows class and style.
The “Sparkling” from the 2013 vintage comes
with superb creaminess. Huge compliment!
92 2018 Chardonnay trocken
The nose is characterised by slightly buttery aromas, apricot
and pomelo. But it also has iodine tones. On the palate, one
senses some pronounced fruitiness and a fresh acidity. There
also remains a stony minerality. An exciting and at the same
time light-footed Chardonnay. 13 Vol.-%. screwcap, €€

Ripe smoky Pinot nose with raspberry, smoke and yeast. On
the palate there is very fine mousse and ripe acidity softly
starting, aristocratic and with fine spice, shows mildness and
less tension with its ripe age, but wise relaxation. Superb
creaminess. 12,5 Vol.-%. cork, €€
96 2018 »N114« Pinot Noir trocken
Fruity notes and cool minerality in the precise aroma, blueberry
and cherry, also herbs and some fine ink. Gripping and
with good tension on the palate, good extract and excellent
balance of the elements, tannins of high quality, powerful
and very elegant. Exquisite. 13 Vol.-%. screwcap, €€€€
93 2018 Pinot Noir trocken
Cherry on the nose with some ginger, rose petals and a hint
of fine smoke. It does not hide the warm year 2018 on the palate,
ripe fruit, juice and spice. A good extract that unfolds in a
powerful and also charming way, lots of spice and a felicitous
tannin framework. 13 Vol.-%. screwcap, €€€
90 2018 Spätburgunder trocken
Cherry and blueberry show in the fine and slightly smoky
nose, fresh bay leaf and a pinch of allspice. Juicy and soft
on the palate, soon after additional spice, the ripe acidity
takes over, full-bodied and with ripe tannins.
