Much is happening on the Bavarian
shore of Lake Constance – which curiously
forms part of the Württemberg
wine region. Simon Hornstein is one of those
young winemakers entering the limelight with
his wines. Surrounded by Alps and the Lake, he
makes artisanally-crafted and filigree wines
which, like the uncompromisingly-dry Grauburgunder
and the tension-laden Chardonnay,
can still be a little reductive in their youth. But
patience will be rewarded: after a few days the
wines unfold their charms. The Spätburgunders
from the warm 2018 vintage come across as a
little more powerful. A really great performance!
92 2019 Nonnenhorn Grauburgunder trocken
On the nose, yeast, smoke, toasted aromas, melon and
quince, also herbs, pepper and a hint of malt. Supple on the
palate with a slender contour, spice and apparent ripe acidity.
Uncompromisingly-dry and pure. Good length.
12,5 Vol.-%. screwcap, €€
further and good substance. Ageing potential.
13,5 Vol.-%. cork, €€
89 2018 Spätburgunder trocken
91 2019 Nonnenhorn Chardonnay trocken
Strong smoky aromas on the nose, followed by melon,
quince, pear and a few reductive notes. On the palate
well-focused, emphatically-dry and kitsch-free with subtle
fruit notes and obvious woody tones. Crunchy and with density,
very youthful and with good ageing potential.
12,5 Vol.-%. screwcap, €€
91 2018 Nonnenhorn Seehalde
Spätburgunder trocken
Smoky and yeasty scents with background notes of cherry
and also floral hints, spicy accents, ginger and white pepper.
Dense and spicy on the palate, the structure shows the warm
year, but also the finesse of Pinot. A wine with further ageing
potential. 13,5 Vol.-%. cork, €€€
90 2018 Nonnenhorn Spätburgunder trocken
Rosehip and cherry on the nose, also yeast, smoke and blood
orange. Strong and dry on the palate, despite the sweet extract,
soft and rather broad. Vivid tannins that will develop
89 2019 Müller-Thurgau trocken
On the nose, yeast, apple, meadow herbs and some malt.
On the palate dry with good freshness, no flatterer on the
palate, absolutely unpretentious, natural and direct in expression.
Good tension, medium length, youthful and gastronomically-intriguing.
12,5 Vol.-%, screwcap, €
