RÜDESHEIM | BERG ROTTLAND
This 31ha/76 acre fully-south-facing site rises
from 90-140m/295-459ft and has
predominantly deep loess-loam soils with
some slate, quartzite and gravel. Compared to
Berg Schlossberg, Berg Rottland brings forth
the more powerful wines of the Rüdesheimer
Berg. The name is derived from the old term
“rotten” which refers to the clearing of the site
in the 11th century.
This 37ha/91 acre site, surrounded by a
perimeter wall, is divided in two parts: the
Zehnstück in the mid-slope for dry wines
and the upper Mauerstück with trellising
for the (residually sweet) Kabinett wines.
At an altitude between 133-235m/436-
755ft with inclines between 15-35%, its
soils are medium to deep and of sandy,
clay-rich loam which contains stony slate
in its upper reaches. This former
experimental vineyard of the Cistercians is
now a monopole of the Hessian State
Domaine at Kloster Eberbach.
JOHANNISBERG |
SCHLOSS JOHANNISBERG
This site is not only legendary because the
idea of Spätlese was supposedly invented
here. No, its natural conditions are also
unique. This history-steeped slope has
medium to deep soils of loess and loessloam
with an admixture of iron-oxide-rich
slate and quartzite. The fully south-facing
site rises from 114-182m/374-597ft.
