By now, Thorsten Mehrlein farms a respectable
62 hectares of vines between
Oestrich and Rüdesheim – amongst
them renowned sites like the Oestricher Doosberg,
Johannisberger Erntebringer or
Oestricher Klosterberg and 98% of his vineyards
are planted to Riesling. This turns
Mehrlein into a Riesling specialist – and he
knows how to reveal the variety’s most charming
aspects. The fruit is clearly depicted, a few
wines show an alluring interplay of acidity
and sweetness, all are slender, linear and avoid
unnecessary ballast. An impressive collection!

Apple and apricot on the nose, orange zest, some herbs such
as thyme. Well-structured Riesling with density, good extract
and fine sweetness. Harmonises well with aromas of citrus
fruit on the palate. The fine minerality lends character.

Multi-layered nose with ripe stone fruit, papaya and peach,
spice, also darker notes, bay leaf. Juicy and deep. On the palate
there is nice spice and texture; well balanced, the elements
are well integrated, lean and yet intense.

Ripe mango and peach on the nose, grapefruit, also orange
peel and herbs. Slenderly built on the palate, everything is
balanced, juicy and with ripe and lively acidity, nice sweetness-acidity
interplay. Stylish Riesling that knows why it is

89 2019 Johannisberg Erntebringer Riesling
Clear, pale yellow. On the nose - passion fruit, ripe citrus fruit,
lush peach. On the palate lively acidity and a fine sweetness.
Again bright, exotic sweet fruit, medium structure and
length, with some apple tartness. 11,5 Vol.-%, screwcap, €
89 2019 »Quarzit« Riesling trocken
Spicy, herbal nose showing apple and stone fruit, also
warm stone. With clear, pure fruit on the palate and lots of
juice and texture, good balance of spice, sweetness and
freshness, slenderly built. Also has tang and is very moreish.
