We have the impression that each
year Alexander Johannes Jung’s
wines come across with a little
more precision and focus. The wines he made
in the 2019 vintage are definitely impressive,
his entire range of wines is at a very good
standard. The Grosses Gewächs scores with its
fine savour, grip and stony minerality – it is
among the top Rheignau players. The Eiswein
is exquisite and we are also impressed with the
Spätburgunders. For a while, this winery was
amongst the more nondescript VDP members
in the Rheingau – now it is really showing profile.
93 2019 Erbach Hohenrain Riesling GG
Red-green fruit on the nose, sweet reine claude plums, density
and fine minerality and also spice. Flow and depth on the
palate, gradually weaving more and more fine grip into the
steady flow; stony minerality, salty citrus fruit and a hint of
smokiness. Good potential. 13 Vol.-%, screwcap, €€€
92 2016 »Alexander Johannes«
Spätburgunder trocken
Smoky cherry notes on the nose, wild cherry, also fine wood.
On the palate, cherry, tobacco and some juiciness. The tannin
is pleasantly vivid and lends structure. Acidity and minerality
provide a nice flow. Elegant Pinot. 13,5 Vol.-%, screwcap, €€€
94 2018 Erbach Michelmark Riesling Eiswein
Very good clarity on the nose - sultana, date. On the palate
viscous, plump, comparatively discreet acidity, already concentrated.
This concentration, however, is on a vintage-typical
mild acidity, extract-rich palate. Round and rich, honey-sweet
finish. Long-lived. 8,5 Vol.-%, screwcap, €€€
92 2019 Erbach Michelmark Riesling Spätlese
A hint of overripeness on the nose, dried apricot, candied
peach, pineapple; a real fruit basket. Dense and full-bodied
on the palate, powerful extract, the rich sweetness is completely
balanced by the acidic backbone. A very dense
Spätlese with very good potential. 8,5 Vol.-%, screwcap, €€
91 2019 Erbach Steinmorgen
91 2019 »Charta« Riesling trocken
90 2019 Erbach Steinmorgen
Riesling Erste Lage feinherb
90 2019 »Alte Reben« Riesling trocken
89 2019 Sauvignon Blanc trocken
89 2019 Riesling trocken
91 2016 Erbach Steinmorgen
Spätburgunder Erste Lage trocken
90 2019 Erbach Riesling trocken
Balanced aroma, bright fruit, white peach, stone, some
herbs, fresh orange. Rounded on the palate at first, followed
by citric acidity, tart hints, some grapefruit juice and
zest. Juicy, refreshing, with tart nuances and fine herbaceousness.
12,5 Vol.-%, screwcap, €
