The 2019-vintage must have found itself
in ideal conditions in and around Niederhausen
– and Cornelius Dönnhoff
and his team converted these raw materials in
just as ideal a fashion. We tasted Grosse
Gewächse bursting with mineral extract; Kabinetts
and Spätlesen that could easily be archetypes
for their respective Prädikat category;
nobly sweet wines full of precision and depth.
So much density and brilliance, such disarming
clarity and such exquisite balance – this is sensational
– even for a winery at this level. We
congratulate the Dönnhoffs on winning the
“Wine Range of the Year” (also see page 18).
98 2019 Schlossböckelheim Felsenberg
Felsentürmchen Riesling GG
Still closed nose, some citrus and quite intense rocky notes.
Richly-textured with very fine phenolics, a texture without
effort, ultra-fine acidity and not a moment of isolated sweetness,
distinguished and enigmatic. 13 Vol.-%. €€€
97 2019 Niederhausen Hermannshöhle
Riesling GG
Candied lemon peel, floral notes and flint. The palate is wellbalanced
with great intensity and richness of fruit. Phenolic
and mineral extract go hand in hand, delicate yet with a
strong drive and finish. Magnificent! 13 Vol.-%.
98 2019 »Einzelpfahl« Niederhausen
Hermannshöhle Riesling Auslese
Highly complex aromatics of sultana, candied lemon, candied
ginger, ultra-fine botrytis, mineral rock notes, dried fig and
date. Sweet and viscous on the palate, very well-balanced with
a bracing acidity and tactile minerality. Great length, concentrated,
but all about finesse on the finish. 8 Vol.-%.
97 2019 Oberhausen Brücke Riesling Auslese
Delicate, very fine and very clear botrytis, candied citrus fruit on
the nose. On the palate there is almost painful density and a vibrating
tension, viscous, but also substantial, highly condensed
in mineral extract. Very compelling wine. 7,5 Vol.-%. €€€
95 2019 Niederhausen Hermannshöhle
Riesling Spätlese
93 2019 Oberhausen Brücke Riesling Spätlese
94 2019 Niederhausen Klamm
Riesling Kabinett
Slate spice on the nose, crushed rock and citrus. On the
palate, very complete and yet a Kabinett with typicity. Rich
complex layers on the palate, crunchy acidity, rather restrained
sweetness, intense and linear finish. Very good potential!
9 Vol.-%, €€
