The subregion of Markgräflerland is famous
for Gutedel, aka Chasselas, a grape
variety that often is underrated, simply
because it is not about plump fruit but elegant,
light-footed structure. Yvonne Kessler and Martin
Männer who took over Weingut Blankenhorn
in 2014, pay particular attention to this regional
classic. It is a joy to witness what wonderful
minerality they manage to express in their
Gutedel wines. Beyond that, there is of course the
Chardonnay Grosses Gewächs from the Schliengener
Sonnenstück site, just as much of a magnificence
as the Spätburgunder from the same site.
But do make sure to also try the Gutedel!

On the nose fine vanilla, some smoke, toast, quince, pear, ripe
apple, delicate almond nuances, appealing. On the palate,
texture, quince, fine acidity, nice balance and tension, elegant,
finely woven, dense structure and a long finish. Further
potential. 13 Vol.-%. cork, €€€

After aeration delicate smoke, crushed rock, lemon balm, apple
peel, delicate spice and some pear emerge. On the palate
fine acidity, grippy, phenolics, texture, bright fruits, atypical
Gutedel with a fine structure and good length. Elegant, has
further potential, great with food. 11,5 Vol.-%. DIAM, €€

On the nose, scents of vanilla and delicate smoke, apple,
peach blossom, honeydew melon, a mineral underlay and
some tangerine - more Chardonnay than Gutedel. On the palate
a lot of traction, fine light fruits, phenolics, quince, apple
peel, potential, mineral traction and tension.

Spätburgunder GG
Cherry, sloe berry, mulberry, smoke, wood spice, herbs and a
complex, mineral underlay. On the palate grippy, ripe tannins,
red fruits, balancing acidity, elegance and power.
Densely woven, beautiful length - great food wine.

After aeration, fragrances of crunchy light fruits (green apple,
pear), peach blossom, some crushed rock and delicate
smoke emerge. On the palate balanced acidity, grip, delicate
fruit, balm, refined phenolics and good structure. Versatile.
