Rather interesting things are happening in
this three-nation corner where Germany,
France and Switzerland meet. Just across
from Basel, Johannes and Christoph Schneider
know how to express a classical Pinot style – as
they demonstrate in their elegant “Kapf”. Their
quiet, filigree Gutedels (Chasselas) have also
demonstrated the brothers’ talents for years. At the
same time they have dared to try their hands at less
conventional styles – thank heavens! The skin-fermented
“El Fayoum” illustrates how exquisite
wines can be that have hardly had any additions of
sulphur dioxide. We look forward to more of their
ideas and excitedly await further developments.
91 2018 Haltingen Stiege Gutedel trocken
Lively freshness and aromas of pears, green apples and almonds
combine very harmoniously. The ageing in steel tanks
makes the wine a versatile, unobtrusive food wine. Restrained
acidity, light phenolic finish. 11 Vol.-%. cork, €€€
90 2018 »Le Blanc vom Kalkstein«
trocken WB/CH
92 2019 »El Fayoum« Gutedel trocken
The intense colour already indicates a long maceration time.
The nose confirms the imminent palate assumption: a wild
mix of aromas, malty and yeasty notes, some pepper and obvious
spontaneous notes. At the same time, the wine is extremely
clean. A great drinking pleasure.
9,5 Vol.-%. cork, €€€
91 2019 »gres rose« trocken
A highly interesting rosé that is far removed from the conventional
Pinot Noir style. A natural wine with little use of
sulphur, yet not animalistic, but pronounced and very clean
in its unusual aromatics. Exciting! 11,5 Vol.-%. cork, €€€
93 2017 Weil Schlipf Kapf Spätburgunder tr.
Pure elegance on the palate: filigree berry fruit, silky tannins.
Nevertheless, no tartness, the structure is precisely-defined.
Clearly present minerality, which comes from limestone.
Very fine extract, an excellent length with a perfectly shaped
finish. 12,5 Vol.-%. cork, €€€
91 2017 Weil Spätburgunder trocken
Blueberries and a little cranberry on the palate. Polished
tannins, mild acidity. Well-structured body, reasonable
length, good storage potential. Successful and very discreet
use of wood. A testament to the class of German Pinot
Noirs. 12,5 Vol.-%, cork, €€
