Year on year, the wines made by Fabian
Schmidt at Weingut Im Weinegg gain
more profile. They show that this winemaker
has mastered all disciplines, whether
that is Riesling in dry, off-dry or sweet styles:
they all show structure, depth and individual
character – like his “Stückfass” from the
Hochheimer Reichestal site. His Auslese from
the same site is delicious. Fabian Schmidt
started this winery in 2009 and his sensitive
use of wood is part of his house style. His red
wines, like the astonishingly clear and fresh
Merlot, are also well made. Chapeau!

Riesling feinherb
Clear, pale yellow. On the nose fine bright fruit, peach blossom,
some lemon balm. On the palate a lot of texture, fine
fruit and delicious phenolics, smooth sweetness with some
tangerine and honey. Good structure, elegant, ends gently
and in a long finish. 12,5 Vol.-%, cork, €€

Herbs on the nose, stone fruit, peach, apricot and papaya,
also some fine malt. Lean and tightly-built on the palate with
juice, clear fruit and ripe, vivid acidity, discreet residual
sweetness. Good substance, also phenolic and mineral. Still
young, will evolve. 12,5 Vol.-%, screwcap, €

Fruity and herbaceous nose, black cherry, blackcurrant and
blackberry, fine smoke and toasty aromas. Powerful and vivid
on the palate. Good balance of substance and freshness, the
fruit is clear and pure; individual Merlot with expression.

Rich yellow. On the nose blossom honey, dried apricot, wet,
hot stone, sultana. Very intense and fine. On the palate first
dried fruit, then fine texture and lively acidity, smoke, honey.

Apricot, peach and also mango on the fruity nose. Well-balanced
on the palate. The juicy fruit blends with pleasant
acidity in a lean texture. Fine spice, clear in expression and
also with mineral hints; a lot of wine for the money.
