ZELL | SCHWARZER HERRGOTT
This 11ha/27 acre site lies at a relatively high
altitude for the Pfalz: at 170-250m/557-
820ft. The name-giving shrine within the
vineyard was erected by the monks of Zell
abbey and it weathered into a black colour,
hence today’s name for the crucifix. Around
the year 1900, the wines from this site were
amongst the most prized of the Pfalz. Over
the past decade, climate change led to its
rediscovery. It faces due south and is
characterised by porous limestone bedrock
with a thin topsoil of black, calcareous marl.
Thanks to aquiferous layers in the subsoil
vines never experience dry stress here.

KALLSTADT | SAUMAGEN
The Romans quarried limestone here – and
limestone also characterises the opulent yet
always fresh wines of this site. The best
parcels of this vineyard which gently slopes
south to southeast have calcareous marl
soils strongly enriched with weathered
limestone. The lesser parcels of this 40ha/98
acre site are dominated by loess and loam.
The Saumagen sits at the western confines
of the village and is considered Kallstadt’s
best – as well as one of Germany’s best.
