There are numerous winemakers who
exhibit soil profiles in their tasting
rooms to exemplify the differences in
the wines. At Weingut Graf von Weyher it is
sufficient to simply taste the Rieslings side by
side in order to grasp the different influences
of “Kalkmergel” (calcareous marl), “Granit”
and “Schiefer” (slate). It is a very practice-oriented
lesson that combines learning with
pleasure. In any case, what brothers Peter and
Jürgen Graf deliver makes complete sense.
Their savoury Spätburgunder from the Rhodter
Rosengarten site is a success, too. This is
the sort of geology course we all like to take!
91 2018 »Buntsandstein« Weyher
Michelsberg Riesling trocken
Apple, verbena and apricot on the nose, lime zest, a touch of
cumin and aniseed. Relaxed on the palate, well built in stature,
ripe acidity, balanced and harmonious, fine spice and
mineral notes line the back palate. Clear profile.
13 Vol.-%. screwcap, €€
substance and volume, broad and powerful; dark, ripe cherries
again, spicy with prominent tannins. Made for the table.
13,5 Vol.-%. screwcap, €
88 2019 Rhodt Schlossberg
Cabernet Blanc trocken
90 2019 »Schiefer« Burrweiler Altenforst
Riesling trocken
Classic Riesling nose with peach and apricot, lemon notes
and a subtle slate spiciness. Medium extract on the palate,
relaxed mouthfeel, ripe acidity, nice spiciness and minerality
that lingers nicely. Classic style and a wonderful expression
of soil. 13 Vol.-%. screwcap, €€
89 2019 »Kalkmergel« Weyher Michelsberg
Riesling trocken
Wet stone on the nose along with stone fruit such as ripe
peach and apricot. On the palate, the self-confident acidity
and fruit sweetness enter into a little duet, beautiful interplay.
A harmoniously rounded wine accompanied by chalky
mineral texture. 13 Vol.-%. screwcap, €€
89 2018 Rhodt Rosengarten
Spätburgunder trocken
Dark cherry on the nose with spice, cinnamon stick, bay leaf
and cloves, wood notes and beetroot. On the palate there is
90 2019 »Granit« Burrweiler Altenforst
Riesling trocken
A bouquet as if from a vineyard after summer rain, wet
stone, herbs, leafy green, plus apple and tangerine. On the
palate there is an agile acidity accompanied by a little fruit
sweetness, darker, stony notes and a steely minerality that
provides character. 13 Vol.-%, screwcap, €€
