There have been no changes at our estate
since last year,” Verena Schöttle and
Günter Schulz have us know. For an estate
at this quality level, this is truly good
news. And indeed, once again and as in previous
years, their Chardonnay “Clos de Schulz”
takes the title of Rheingau’s most atypical
wine – simply because it is so Burgundian. As
always with the Pinot Noirs, you have the
choice between the mineral bite of the Lorch
sites and the generosity of the Rüdesheim sites
– or the finely tuned balance of “Le Schulz”.
Please continue!
94 2017 »Clos de Schulz« Chardonnay trocken
Discreet wood spice, aniseed biscuit and pepper, wormwood,
but then also butter and yellow fruit. Powdery tannins, tight
body, dense, supple and firmness is closely interwoven; concentrated
acidity, pithy, and clearly perceptible mineral finish.
13,5 Vol.-%, cork, €€€
91 2017 »Selection Schulz« Pinot Noir trocken
94 2017 Rüdesheim Drachenstein Pinot Noir tr.
Wild cherry, blood, iron, blackcurrant and redcurrant. Immense
density, powerful and delicate simultaneously, firm,
palpable mineral, ripe but with sufficient acidity, and some
creaminess in the background. Has long ageing potential.
14 Vol.-%, cork, €€€€
94 2017 Lorch Schlossberg Pinot Noir trocken
Ethereal scent, juniper, tree resin, dark raspberry, discreet
wood. On the palate there is extract, mellow-grainy tannins,
a backbone of acid, but also enough fruit to turn the structure
into fullness. Dense, long, immensely young.
13,5 Vol.-%, cork, €€€€
93 2017 »Le Schulz« Pinot Noir trocken
Strong new wood, raspberry and tree resin on the nose. On
the palate a dense but also mellow tannin texture, slightly
drying tannins, firm acid backbone, plump body, obvious vivid
minerality. It is refined, rich in extract and elegant at the
same time. 14 Vol.-%, cork, €€€€
93 2017 Rüdesheim Pinot Noir trocken
Wild cherry, black pepper, stony mineral notes, closed red
berry aromas. On the palate there is immense tannin texture,
yet everything is fine and mellow, lots of juiciness and
a delicious mineral note in the background. Stylish; will
age excellently. 14 Vol.-%, cork, €€€
