This year, Johannes and Sabine who run
the Johannishof estate chose not to present
their current Grosse Gewächse. In
their place, we tasted a Riesling GG from the
Rüdesheimer Berg Rottland from the 2015 vintage
which came across as a little unwieldy.
However, what we had in our tasting glasses
from the 2019 vintage raised our expectations:
The Rieslings from the Erste Lagen show presence,
especially Ramstein, which is finely woven
and shows mineral tension. The sophisticated
Spätlese from the Johannisberger Klaus site
turned out spectacularly well. We are more than
happy to wait to taste the Grosse Gewächse.

Riesling Erste Lage trocken
Red apple and freshly peeled orange peel on the nose. Very
vivid on the palate, fine phenolics, lively sweetness-acidity interplay
with a slight predominance of sweetness. Good body,
full-bodied with terpenic notes, and a fruity and aromatic finish.

Riesling Spätlese
Ripe red apple, a hint of sultana, peppery notes, warm brick.
A robust body, substantial, with slightly green acidity, intensely
obvious mineral on the mid palate and noticeable alcohol.
Juxtaposition of sweetness and acid. Will need bottle
age. 10 Vol.-%, screwcap, €€

90 2019 »Charta Fass 94« Riesling
Berry notes, yellow-fruited, delicious yeast, a hint of flinty
mineral spice on the nose. Juicy acidity on the palate, generous,
fruity sweetness, medium-weight extract, a typical representative
of the style that will develop elegantly after a
few years of bottle ageing. 12 Vol.-%, screwcap, €€
93 2019 Johannisberg Klaus Riesling Spätlese
Mineral fragrance, tangerine and flint. On the palate, despite
the vivid sweetness, quite fresh and unpretentious, acidity.
Freshness and mineral extract dominate the underlying
creamy style. Long and compact, very mineral and with refinement.

Riesling Erste Lage trocken
Citrus-scented and floral, a balsamic hint of rosewood. On
the palate there is subtle restraint, delicious acidity, finely-chiselled
extract. Very much in the style of a dry Kabinett,
real tension from tangible minerality. A subtle wine.
