Johannes Schmitz could be seen as a kind
of head gardener in the Ürziger Würzgarten
site – together with his team, he cultivates
a remarkable six hectares of this impressive
steep site. His house style lets fruit take
centre stage but also leaves room for the minerality
of this unique vineyard with its red
soils. In his 2019 offering, it is the two fruity
Spätlesen that take the top spots: the “Urglück”
which hails from a sheltered parcel and
shows both density and playfulness, while the
“Grand Ley” closer to the large slate rock
turns out to be more profound and powerful.

Clear, full-bodied, firm and yet flowing. Finely spicy with light
fruit, red apple, herbs and stone nuances. Juicy, fine phenolics
and a mineral grip, continual flow and with fine spiciness

Herbal, spicy, deep with dark mineral nuances, apple, yellow
fruit and hints of blossom. Concentrated and yet delicate on
the palate. Peach, tart hints, citrus zest and mineral spiciness.
Beautiful interplay between sweet fruit and fine acidity.

Good volume on the nose, a stony spiciness, also apricot, dark
yellow fruit and a very subtle etherealness. Focused on the
palate with fresh fruit, notes of orange, with fitting Spätlese

Würzgarten Riesling Kabinett feinherb
Red apple, herbs and spicy slate minerality with added
stone dust nuances on the nose. On the palate juicy with
tart hints, subtle sweetness and a fresh, citric acid structure.
A racy Kabinett with a fine herbal finish.
