For more than 300 years the Eck family
has making wines. Master Winzer Jürgen
Eck now runs the family estate in Ilbesheim
with its 13 hectares of vineyard. He
mainly looks after the vineyards while daughter
Jasmin, after graduating from Geisenheim
and a stint in South Africa, now enlivens both
cellar and packaging with new ideas. “Both
passion and experience play important roles,”
this father-daughter-team reports. The wines
clearly show that something is afoot here, like
the finely balanced Weissburgunder from the
Ilbesheimer Kalmit site.

Chardonnay trocken
A little coconut on the nose, delicate smoke, quince peel, apple
and pear, also yellow fruit and a touch of honey. Powerful
and firmly built on the palate; sweet extract, juice and spice.
A generous Chardonnay with an international touch and a
Pfalz signature. Will evolve. 13 Vol.-%. screwcap, €
acidity. The tannins are vivid and a touch astringent, ideal.

89 2019 »Alte Reben« Riesling trocken
Ripe mirabelle plum on the nose, citrus fruit, apple with a
trace of leafiness. A well built and multi-layered Riesling
with spice and juice, good fullness, medium extract, showing
freshness with vivid acidity. Animating to drink, straightforward,
citric on the finish. 13 Vol.-%. screwcap, €
88 2019 Sauvignon Blanc trocken
Spicy nose of grapefruit, redcurrants, green pepper and also
herbal notes and a hint of leafiness. Fresh on the palate with
an invigorating acid structure, straightforward and with good
traction, fine juice, notes of apricot and spice again. A good
summer wine and aperitif. 12,5 Vol.-%. screwcap, €
89 2018 Göcklingen Kaiserberg
Frühburgunder trocken
Herbal nose, delicate wood spice, cherry as well as plum and
vanilla notes, somewhat ethereal. Good varietal depiction
with fruity fullness and spice in a medium-body, balanced
90 2019 Ilbesheim Kalmit Weissburgunder tr.
Tangerine, mirabelle plum and apricot on the nose, delicate
spice and floral notes, also apple. An elegant Pinot
Blanc with good structure and balance, a refined juiciness
and well-woven acidity in addition to mineral tones. Successfully
shows the terroir of the Kalmit.
