Things are moving fast at Mario Zelt’s
winery: all throughout summer 2020
there were buiding works, new construction
and refurbishment works. The harvest
was pressed in the new winery – and we
are curious! The wines that were presented
from the 2017 and 2018 vintages come across
as “business as usual”: the Rieslings are in the
rather corpulent camp, the Spätburgunders,
by contrast, are all the more juicy and elegant.
The 2018 vintage sat particularly well with
this style. The Bordeaux blend is also remarkable.

Riesling trocken
Deep, dark spice, autumn apple. Juicy and round on the palate,
fine grip, tangy with fine sweet fruit concentration. Tart
hints, some piquancy and spiciness, herbal spice, stone fruit
and incisive acidity. Good length. 13,5 Vol.-%. cork, €€€

Spätburgunder trocken
Dark notes, sweet cherry, wood spice, hints of iodine, brooding
minerality. Clear and well textured with fine grained tannins
on the palate. Depth and calmness are complemented
by fine juicy notes of sour cherry. Gripping towards the back
with a lively acid structure. 13 Vol.-%. cork, €€€

Dense, delicately spicy, cherry fruit, blueberry, cool nuances
of mint. On the palate there is fine grip, dark spice, fresh fruit
with tart hints. Grainy mature tannins give bite. Juicy, lively
acid structure. 13,5 Vol.-%. cork, €€€
91 2017 Grosskarlbach Burgweg
Spätburgunder trocken
Red fruit (strawberry/wild raspberry), subtle smoke, pencil,
slightly stemmy undertones, a hint of white pepper and nutmeg,
discreet wood spice. Clear, fresh, juicy on the palate
there is fine acidity and good grip. 13 Vol.-%. cork, €€€

Riesling trocken
Yellow fruit and dark spice on the nose. Juicy, full bodied,
round on the palate with concise, if accentuated acidity.
Pome fruit, vegetal undertones. Fine grip with herbal spice
and bright citrus fruit. A powerful take on the vintage.
