One of Germany’s most climatically<br />

blessed sites: Ihringer Winklerberg<br />

OBERROTWEIL | KIRCHBERG<br />

The best site of the inner Kaiserstuhl is<br />

just 3.3ha/8.1 acres small and with inclines<br />

between 10-30% not particularly steep.<br />

What is unique, however, is the weathered<br />

volcanic soil of the Kirchberg. It is covered<br />

in countless nut-sized stones expelled by the<br />

Kaiserstuhl volcano during its active phase.<br />

Even more unusually, there are inclusions<br />

of limestone in the volcanic soil. Altitude:<br />

The original Winklerberg consists of steep<br />

terraces and steep amphitheatres with<br />

black soils of weathered volcanic rock. The<br />

steep terraces reach inclines of up to 80%<br />

and mostly face southwest. The extended<br />

Winklerberg also includes loess terraces and<br />

totally flat valley sites with river sediments.<br />
