Last year we awarded the third star to the
organic Rieger estate and the wines they
presented this year confirmed that they
really belong in this category. From 2010 onwards,
19 hectares of vines have been farmed
according to biodynamic principles. The winery
is run by Philipp Rieger who took over
from his parents in 2013. All the wines have a
coherent style and show a natural balance and
harmony. Our particular recommendation this
time around is the fresh-faced and spicy “Chasselas
Steinig”, that comes entirely without
make-up. We are absolutely convinced that
this upward trajectory will continue.

Rose petals, mango and cumin on the nose. Juicy and soft on
the palate, soon shows its substance, dense, good extract
that unfolds smoothly, vivacious acidity and precise fruit, underpinned
by fine mineral spice, multi-layered, nuanced.

Pinot Gris from vines planted in 1966, salmon-coloured. Pear
and redcurrants in the berry nose, iodine and fine wood
notes. Full-bodied. On the palate there is good density, lots of
tension, slightly creamy background, cool aura, almost demanding
minerality. Impressive. 13 Vol.-%. cork, €€

Planted in 1964, Pinot berry nose, redcurranst, fine wood
spice and flowers. Creamy on the palate, lots of substance
builds up, dense and with interwoven, ripe acidity, well-balanced,
spice and Burgundian depth, with a structure designed

Multi-layered bouquet with fine woody notes, cherry, juniper
berry, blood orange and pine needles. Powerful with a
broad body, dense with developed strength, spicy, intense in
all areas and well-balanced. Fireside wine.

Strong lemon yellow in the glass, ripe green apples and lime
zest on the nose, fine smoke, ripe mirabelle plums. Juicy and
spicy on the palate, slender and firm body, creamy chalky
minerality forms in the background, good tension. Finishes
