The Nikolai family will soon be able to celebrate
a big anniversary: they have been
making wine in the Rheingau since 1824
and they had their 196th harvest in 2020. Frank
and Katharina Nikolai are the sixth generation
of the family to run the estate, farming sixteen
hectares of vines on Taunus-quartzite, loess and
loam – and Riesling plays the starring role, of
course. The 2019 wines, once again, turned out
really well, it was the GG Steinmorgen with its
juicy fruit and mineral grip that really gripped
us. We were also surprised by the rounded Spätburgunder
with its spicy fruit. It’s worth noting:
you get a lot of wine here at a good price.

Steinmorgen Riesling trocken
Rounded and full-bodied on the nose. Green papaya, apple,
ripe stone fruit, fine minerality and spiciness. Mouth-filling
and supple on the palate with freshness and juice. Creamy
peach fruit, fine tart hints, citrus fruit and salty-mineral acidity.

Bright fruit, red crisply-sweet apple, slight hint of caraway,
some hawthorn. Smooth mouthfeel, charming fullness and
juiciness. Fresh orange, some blossom, salty-fresh acid

Riesling Spätlese trocken
Rich yellow fruit, herbs, a little apple and orange on the nose.
Smooth texture on the palate, flowing and balanced. Finely concentrated
fruit, delicious spice, fine acid grip. Ripe Amalfi lemon,
orange zest and juiciness into the finish. 13 Vol.-%, screwcap

Alte Reben trocken
Some new wood, herbal spice, but also Amarena cherry. Menthol.
Dense cherry fruit on the palate, silky tannins, lots of
juiciness and texture and, despite this plump, round, massive
structure, also good acidity. Sweet, long lasting finish.

and at the same time light on the palate with fine mineral
