Sankt Annaberg was created when Napoleon
had a garrison built for his troops
here. “This place has always been about
food and drink,” reports Victoria Lergenmüller
who took over the running of the estate in 2012
at the age of 21. Her focus is on Riesling, grown
on limestone, Triassic sandstone and rare slate
and beautifully interpreted accordingly. By
now Victoria Lergenmüller also makes a remarkable
Spätburgunder. One thing was clear
for this winemaker from the start: she wanted
to reveal “the real character of these wines.
There is nothing worse than compliant wines,’’
she says. Evidently, she is doing a great job!

Pleasantly austere aroma, somewhat stony and restrained
fruit, slightly citric notes. Mineral on the palate, dry style
that goes well with the fine acidity. All very coherent, a terroir
wine without being bold. Good finish with lots of flavour

The wood for the 500-litre barrel in which the wine was matured
comes from the Johanniskreuz site. The nose is not
about primary aromas, but on the palate the sometimes
cheeky Riesling fruit remains restrained. Firm structure,
seems very serious, will develop well. 13 Vol.-%. cork, €€€

Individual nose, ivy, chamomile, green apple, hay, blossom
and exotic fruits. Exciting and multifaceted. Moderate acidity
and tasty terroir on the palate, good balance. Slightly salty
and of good length. Be quick, there are only 750 bottles.

Old vines that really deserve this designation. Some of them
are 65 years old and far from retirement. So clear and vital on
the nose, never superficial, but delicate with more herbiness
than fruit. On the palate there is good substance, minerality
