Katharina Pfefferle runs Weingut Schneider-Pfefferle
together with her husband
Mathias. While she is responsible
for winemaking, he is looking after the eight
hectares of vines which are farmed organically.
The vineyards are in the Heitersheim sites of
Maltesergarten and Sonnhohle. We particularly
liked the mineral “Steiwii”, fermented in
a concrete egg, and the savoury, smooth Wissburgunder
“Pur”. The estate also runs a
“Straussi”, a seasonal, rustic pop-up where
you can taste these unpretentious wines. A
good address to know in the Markgräflerland!

Lots of yeast on the nose, apple peel and cider with caraway
notes and dried apricot. Gripping. On the palate there is good
tension and density, but this is also supple with juice and
some richness, phenolic layering, spicy and peppery. Still

Honeydew melon on the intense aroma, candied walnuts and
ripe pear, pine needles. Relaxed, spicy and juicy on the palate,
where an immanent and calm tension develops, good extract

89 2019 »Fumé« Sauvignon Blanc trocken
No loud and international Sauvignon nose, ripe gooseberry,
apricot, also redcurrants and spicy aromas. Dry. On the palate
there is crisp acidity, not overloaded with fruit, tightly interwoven
structure, fine spice, slightly astringent tannins.

Blend of Merlot, Pinot Noir and Cabernet Sauvignon, berry
and smoky nose followed by blackcurrant, redcurrants, black
cherry and cherry chocolate with hints of marzipan. Strong,
dry and honest on the palate, powerful structure with substance,
tart freshness. 14 Vol.-%. screwcap, €
91 2017 »Steiwii« Gutedel trocken
Mirabelle plums, apple in the attractive nose with a
citric accompaniment scent, wet stone, iodine. Lean and
tightly-built on the palate, tightly woven, with good density
and tension, concise mineral underpinning and with that
certain something that does not need to be explained.
